List Of Prenatal Screening Tests In 2nd Trimester
In the second trimester of your pregnancy, there are not many tests that you have to encounter. These tests are mainly to check the growth level of your baby and to do a thorough check of your baby’s health. Prenatal tests are crucial for you in every trimester that checks that everything is working under controlled conditions. After these tests, your doctor might add up some medications and tell you about the precautions and food patterns to follow. So without any further adieu let’s get straight into it:
Ultrasound is the most common form of test which you will undergo many times during this pregnancy period. But in the second trimester, this ultrasound will be more detailed. It is called a fetal anatomy survey as well which is used to evaluate the baby’s development from head to toe. As the second trimester’s ultrasound can not point out potential issues in the baby which is why additional tests will also be prescribed to you.
The fun part of this ultrasound process is that you can see your baby’s fingers and toes growing. That’s so sweet, isn’t it? So, all ultrasound procedures are similar in which the doctor applies a gel on the lower abdomen area and then rolls a transducer on the gel that sends sound waves to the machine. Now you can also hear the heartbeat of your child and you can see him/her moving inside you. 🙂
2. Quadruple Test
The quadruple test is four leveled prenatal test that measures potential possibilities of down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), spina bifida, and anencephaly in the baby. It evaluates the risk factor of these conditions in the baby. Although this test is optional, it is highly recommended for parents to go for this test. This will tell you a lot about your child and in certain conditions can mentally prepare you, in advance.
3. Cordocentesis (Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling, PUBS)
Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling (PUBS) is a procedure that is used to get the fetus’s blood sample which is further used to analyze for certain abnormalities. This diagnostic test (also called cordocentesis, fetal blood sampling, or umbilical vein sampling) is used to detect chromosome abnormalities indicating down syndrome and blood disorders such as anemia and certain infections.
In this procedure, a fine needle is inserted through the abdomen area of the mother into the vein of the umbilical cord. This procedure is safe yet there are possibilities of miscarriage in some cases. This is an optional test. Know more about this test in this article.
4. Blood Test
Some basic blood tests are also performed in the second trimester of your pregnancy to detect the hormonal levels of your body. Glucose level, Protein level, Urine test, hemoglobin, thyroid, and full-body health checkups are generally done by extracting a limited amount of blood from the arm of the mother. This blood goes under proper evaluation and gives a thorough checkup to the whole bodily functions.
These are some common prenatal screening tests in 2nd trimester that a mother has to experience during pregnancy. We know that you are extremely excited yet conscious about your baby. In this trimester you have to be careful when it comes to handling the baby’s health. This is a very crucial and sensitive stage. The fetus has grown up to the size of an apple and will grow to the size of a cabbage until the second trimester ends. Isn’t that interesting and a great way of representing a cute little fetus growing in you? Yes, it’s easy to compare the size of the fetus with fruits and vegetables. It kinda looks cool!
